http://www.packers.com/community/city_of_green_bay/ - This website gives a brief history on the Packers and how being a community owned team playing teams owned by billionaires is kind of a David Vs. Goliath situation.
The Green Bay Packers were founded in 1919 the historic Earl "Curly" Lambeau. During time period of 1920 to 1930 the Packers were just once of the many small town teams that were first starting up. Through the years, slowly but surely, every other small town team has fallen off the map. Leaving the Packers as the last small town, non-profit, and community owned team, not only in the NFL but in the entire United States.
I think the fact that the people of Green Bay actually own the team is great. Having this since of owner ship by the community is probably one of the many reasons why every Packer game since 1960 has been sold out, I don't think the Vikings can say that. I think the reason for are large fan base is the fact that everyone has a say as to what happens to the team in Green Bay. Owning the team just gives the community a great since of belonging to the storied franchise.
Most teams in the NFL only have one owner who has the power over everyone. A great example of this is Jerry Jones of the Cowboys, he is the only owner and does whatever he wants with his team. I think that is part of the Cowboys downfall every since the 1990's. He makes drastic decisions without consulting anyone about it or by taking a vote on it. With the Packers though, its not just one wild man making the decisions. Everything is voted on and thought through by the community. The Packers belong to Green Bay and Green Bay belongs to the Packers.

I agree with this. I think the way that how the packers are not owned by some arrogent owner is very unique and important to a city like Green Bay. I think that this is why the packers also have a lot more fans than most teams. I also like how that the packers have a very good history. They rarely have problems with players and also they have a very impressive trophy case, unlike the vickings.
ReplyDeleteVickings? Is that a Michael Vick owned team? But anyways, yes I agree with Grant that the team's success does depend on the tight-knit community Green Bay has with their players. I think it is an awesome experience for young kids to go to training camp and places where Packer players are seen multiple times. These experiences are no where to be seen in high profile cities like New York where the media has caused the players and ownership to get big heads. The Packers are great for the community and having them owned by the people makes everyone feel like they have a say in their team.
